The American Council on Education has taken the lead in studying the pipeline to the presidency and recently completed the inaugural year of the Institute for New Presidents.  What has become clear over the past year is that the role of president is increasingly being molded by exogenous forces and often attacked from multiple directions.  Given the current economic climate and the certainty that most institutions will continue to experience level or declining resources, it is critical for campus leaders to understand the factors that drive board decisions to reorder existing priorities and pursue new directions.  Funded by TIAA-CREF, this monograph offers campus leaders useful guidance as they navigate the challenges of being caught in the middle.
