Retirement Transitions in Higher Education, produced with the generous support of the TIAA-CREF Institute, encourages campus leaders to take a greatly expanded view of traditional retirement. As senior faculty, senior administrators, and presidents seek to transition from full-time work to an active retirement, such as an encore career, continued part-time involvement with the institution, or engagement with the local campus community, institutions often ignore this potential set of resources. This brief takes a close look at the structural and cultural components of retirement transitions for both faculty and presidents, and emphasizes that these issues, which were once relegated to human-resources offices, need to be examined strategically by institutional leadership.
